  • LCS STUDENTS HELP END POVERTY HOUSING
Eighteen (18) dedicated high school students and three very dedicated teachers went on a 4-day trip to the village of Nkwatekese. When we first left LCS at 6:30 AM many of us didn’t know what to expect. Some of us thought that we would be building mud huts that had no windows and we would sleep on the bare ground. In reality it was quite the contrary. When we arrived at around 1 PM we realized that it would not be as bad as originally thought. The houses had windows and we slept on mattresses put on a concrete floor if there wasn’t a bed already there. It was nice to know that we had some amenities and that gave it the homey feel.

We were split into two teams that worked at separate worksites. At one worksite we moved bricks, made mortar, and built up all of the walls. At the other worksite we made the foundation and then we had to fill the base layer with dirt. At the first worksite we had to change to another shortly after lunch as we had done as much as we could for that house. We then went to the second worksite and helped them pour the dirt.

Every night we had to participate in teambuilding exercises. The first night we had to ask 2 of our fellow student workers questions about themselves then we had to share the information with the group. The following night we taped a phrase, such as ‘annoy me’, to five peoples’ foreheads then the others had to do what the paper said and then you had to guess what your paper said. Later that night we also played games with the villagers. We spent about two hours enjoying ourselves playing Oware, Ludu, checkers, and snakes and ladders. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and I am positive the villagers did too.

It can be stated inconclusively that this trip was a huge success. We were able to complete two houses and set the foundation for a house and prepared the bricks for laying on a fourth house. We definitely accomplished our task of instilling pride and hope in the villagers and helping provide good shelter for two (2) families and in a way helping end poverty housing.
