GHANA GOVERNMENT GIVES THUMBS UP TO HFH GHANA
The government of Ghana has praised to HFH Ghana for its role in affordable housing delivery in the country. This was contained in a speech read on behalf of the Sector Minister, Hon. Boniface Abubakar Saddique, by Mr. Yahaya Yakubu during the celebration HFH Ghana’s 20th Anniversary celebration and dedication of its 5,000th house in Kumasi.
“The Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing and for that matter, government, has been monitoring the activities of Habitat for Humanity Ghana over the past years and it is very appreciative of HFH Ghana’s efforts to put up decent and affordable housing in country” the Minister noted adding ‘The Habitat setting is comparable to any of the estates in any of the cities in Ghana’.
The Minister emphasized housing as a basic need adding that housing constitutes the single largest investment most families will make. ‘It is everyone’s dream to own a house. Housing is a key input economic, social and civic development as many housing related activities contribute directly to achieving broader socio-economic goals’, the Minister stressed.
Furthermore, the Minister declared that Housing delivery is an issue of concern for government especially given the fact that Ghana’s population growth rate averages between 2.7% to 3%, the country’s population is expected to grow to between 40% and 60% by 2025. This will call for a concerted shelter delivery policy and action. To this end, the government of Ghana has labelled housing and water as priority areas. Government has also embarked on an affordable housing program aimed at delivering 100,000 housing units with private sector participation as key strategy.
The Sector Minister expressed gratitude to HFH Ghana for its relentless efforts to improve the living conditions of the needy in Ghana. ‘The Habitat’s course is refreshing’ he admitted. The Minister endorsed Habitat for Humanity’s policy of non-discrimination in the selection of beneficiary families and the spirit of self-help in its housing delivery program and appealed to Habitat for Humanity to extend its services to the Northern and Upper West Regions which were hit by the recent floods resulting in the destruction of lives, homes and properties worth millions of Ghanaian Cedis.
