  • Akua Henewaa

Akua Henewaa is a 29 year old farmer who lives in the Kofiase community. She is married to 40 year old John Gyasi also a famer. They have 5 children; Benjamin (5), Isaac (14), Janet (8) (, Dorcas (5) and Grace (3).

The couple lived in a mud house where they shared one room with their children, and kept all other belongings such as utensils, food crops, water for bathing (kept in big buckets), etc. The mud house had to be renovated every year. They had to walk about 5 kilometers to use the public toilet and they made for themselves an improvised bathroom from rusted iron sheets and cloth. When the raining season started in April 2009; a storm pulled down the whole house leaving them homeless. “Fortunately, there was nobody at home during the storm” says Akua.

The family now lives with Benjamin’s brother where they share a room in his 2 room apartment while they wait for their new Habitat house to be completed at the Kofiase affiliate.

A group of volunteers from the International School of Brussels, Belguim, visited Ghana in April… and worked on Akua’s house, the house is yet to be completed and the couple will move in as soon as it is done. This family is looking forward eagerly to moving into their new Habitat house, “it will the happiest day of our lives” Akua said tearfully.
