This past summer I had the distinct privilege of serving on a Habitat for Humanity Global Village Team which traveled to the African nation of Ghana. This was my first time visiting Africa, and my second international build with Habitat. After landing in Accra I met the members of my team, and we quickly bonded as a group.
On the way to our host village of Bouyem, we viewed the amazing vistas Ghana offers, and were introduced to the bustling streets of Kumasi and Techiman. Upon arriving in Bouyem, we received a warm welcome from all the community members, especially the children who ran alongside our bus to catch a glimpse of the visitors.
Immediately we could see the positive impact that Habitat for Humanity International had played in the community. Habitat homes were spread throughout the village, offering a safe and well-constructed home to someone who would otherwise be living in a cramped and dilapidated building. Within days we were working on a home and a community center in the villages of Bouyem and Krobo.
When we weren't building, Habitat for Humanity Ghana provided trips to other Habitat affiliates as well as several site-seeing excursions. During our breaks we traveled to a monkey reserve, a rainforest canopy walk, and Cape Coast. These breaks gave us a chance to see more than just the village where we worked and lived.
However, the most rewarding part of the experience was leaving with the knowledge that you had made a difference in the life of an entire community. After meeting the family that was moving into the house we were building, it became apparent just how important our work is to the people of Ghana. Ghana is a nation that is growing rapidly in many ways, and in order to accommodate this growth, more homes must be built.
Habitat for Humanity Ghana is a supportive and well-organized affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Although we were visitors, we were treated like family. From our trip leader to our cooks to our bus driver, we were always cared for and provided with the necessities to make our trip an enjoyable an memorable one.
A trip to Ghana with Habitat for Humanity International is a positive life-changing experience that has changed me forever. I now feel that my world perspective has been widened and I have been inspired to continue helping others to achieve the privilege of home ownership.
