"At first, I was skeptical, but when my mom mentioned that the job that I would acquire was going to be with Habitat or Humanity Ghana, my thoughts suddenly changed. I was enthused that I would have the opportunity to give back to my country and help improve the housing standards for the less fortunate.
It was an early Saturday morning when my mom had come into my bedroom to inform me that I would have a job over my summer vacation while I spent my time in Ghana. At first, I was sceptical at the fact that I would have an actual job due to the fact that I had never ventured into the work field.
But when she had mentioned that the job that I would acquire was going to be Habitat For Humanity Ghana, my thoughts had suddenly changed. I had heard in the past of the organization and knew that they were an association that helped the impoverished by building homes. I was enthused that I would have the opportunity to give back to my country and help improve the housing standards for the less fortunate.
However, as the day neared where I would have to begin my summer job, I began to grow more and more anxious. I did not know what I would be exposed to at the job. What would my role be in this particular environment? What could I contribute to this organization?
As I walked through the doors of the large white office titled Habitat for Humanity Ghana, my anticipation and expectations of what would be a strenuous work force were different however. On the other hand, the office members greeted me with compassion and friendliness.
I met the Resource Development and Communications Manager, Mr. Emmanuel Ackman, who helped me settle into the empathetic environment effortlessly. He notified me on what my main responsibility in the office would be and from that moment on, I knew that Habitat for Humanity Ghana would be an excellent experience for me. I was willing and eager to be part of this organization even if I would have to go out into the fields and help construct homes; which was my initial assumption of what my job would be.
Throughout the duration of my stay in Ghana and my time in the office of Habitat for Humanity Ghana, I had the opportunity to see the hard work and commitment towards the idea of "building houses for God's people in need of a decent place to live." With this experience, I now have a greater appreciation for the Habitat for Humanity organization internationally and especially in Ghana, my home country. I'm glad and thankful that God has given me the opportunity to contribute my efforts to the Habitat for Humanity Ghana organization.
