H. Andrea Papitto, Student, California, USA [Individual Volunteer]
"When I started at HFHG, I expected my experience to be similar to the ordinary internship in the United States, but it was anything but that. As an intern, I did so many things that were beneficial for my work and personal experience in Ghana, especially as a graduating student.
As a student in my final year at New York University, I went to Ghana to take classes and volunteer at a local organization. Originally, I did not know where to volunteer because the opportunities seemed endless, while each organization supported a good cause.
After much research and thought, I decided to work for an organization I have known since I was a child in the United States - Habitat for Humanity Ghana (HFHG). Initially, I thought I would volunteer by going to different builds, but Denis Lewis, the National Director, helped me find the job that best suited my strengths and preferences. I was going to work in the Department of Resource Development and Communication. I decided to work in this office because they were in the middle of planning a ceremony to commemorate the construction of the 4,000th house in Ghana and it seemed fun and interesting, and that it was.
Initially, I thought I would help to plan the ceremony and do various office duties as necessary, but I never imagined the experiences I would have during my four months at HFHG. While planning the 4000th House Ceremony, I was able to do many things that are not common of a typical internship in the United States. I had many responsibilities and was able to meet people at all levels of business, government, and in the community. While planning for the celebration, I met members of the local business community from companies like Coca Cola, Dizengoff, Avis/Land Tours, and Ernst and Young to name a few. I was also able to meet various government officials like the Ambassador from the United States, Mary Carlin Yates, and even the First Lady of Ghana, H.E. Theresa Kufuor.
When I started at HFHG, I expected my experience to be similar to the ordinary internship in the United States, consisting of filing, copying, and running errands, but it was anything but that. As an intern, I did so many things that were beneficial for my work and personal experience in Ghana, especially as a graduating student. My co-workers, Nadia, Evelyn, and Emmanuel, encouraged me every step of the way and taught me much about business etiquette in Ghana and working for a NGO, which was a first for me. From the beginning of my time volunteering, the people at HFHG welcomed me as a member of their family. My colleagues inspired me daily with their enthusiasm and dedication for helping the less fortunate.
I would like to thank all of the people who work in the Habitat for Humanity Ghana office. Your work ethic, enthusiasm, and tireless commitment to creating "a world where everyone has a decent place to live" has left an indelible mark on my heart and you all have given me an experience I will cherish for a lifetime. Medaase (Thanks)!
