Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with people in need by building and renovating houses, so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which every person can experience God’s love and can live and grow into all that God intends.
Habitat for Humanity Ghana builds simple decent homes through volunteer labour and donations of money and materials. Homeowner families contribute the labour to build their own homes and assist other homeowner families to build theirs. This is not a give away programme. Rather, Habitat for Humanity Ghana provides a no profit, no interest loan in the form of building materials. The homeowner’s monthly mortgage payment, paid over a 10-year period, goes to a Revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses in the community.
Habitat for Humanity Ghana houses are very simple and designed to be affordable to low income families. The standard policy encourages mainly a chamber and hall house with a detached utility block of toilet, bathroom and kitchen.
Families apply to the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate. An affiliate is a local Habitat for Humanity Ghana recognised programme or project situated in an area. It could be a single community affiliate, made up of one community or village, or a multiple community affiliate comprising a number of communities or villages in the same geographical region.
A family selection committee chooses homeowners based on their level of need, their willingness to become partners in the programme, and their ability to repay the loan. Every affiliate follows a non -discriminatory policy of family selection. Neither ethnic background nor religion is a factor in choosing the families that receive a house.
